In 2014 Johnny was struck down with Influenza A H1N1 (Swine Flu) which hospitalised him for 7 months, developing into Double Pneumonia and a string of critical illnesses followed including BocaVirus, Ecoli, liver failure, kidney failure, paralysis, two cardiac arrests and finally a stroke. Following continuous life saving treatments at three intensive care units and four hospitals including ECMO and rehab, Johnny survived and had to learn to stand, eat, talk and walk again. Rehab continued at home and after six months was able to return to the stage at Birmingham's Synthetic City 'Digital Darkness' event with old friends Among the Echoes, Global Citizen & Deviant UK.

The few years have seen Johnny Normal completing the Robot Rock, Robot Rock Remixed and Kings of the Wild Frontier albums, performing at festivals and live gigs including Electro London, Synthetic City & Infest Festivals.

Johnny now performs with The Rude Awakening alongside the lovely Bridget Gray. Having released their debut album Kaleidoscope, a number of singles, and EP's, The Rude Awakening have remixed for other artists including Mechanical Cabaret, The Livelong June, Birmingham Electric, B-Movie, Peter Godwin and others.
